Skills Bank powers TV company to growth
A company which supplies infrastructure to media companies worldwide has increased turnover by 20% thanks to support from Sheffield City Region’s (SCR) Skills Bank.
The Trans-Sport.TV team designs, manufactures and installs broadcast equipment for events such as Premier League Darts and World Snooker.
The Retford-based firm has been working on projects world wide for more than 25 years and boasts an impressive client base including World Snooker, Sky Sports, Matchroom Multi Sport, PokerStars, ITV, IMG, Discovery, and Eurosport.
Working with a SCR Growth Hub Business Growth Specialist, company founders and directors Shaun and Helen Cope were referred through to Skills Bank, where they received leadership and management training.
Up to this point all responsibility had fallen on the shoulders of the husband and wife management team.
They said they found it “refreshing” to be able to exchange ideas with a Business Growth Specialist, and benefited from their support throughout the training process as well as being signposted to a Consultant who specialised in working strategically with family businesses.
Helen said: “We accessed Skills Bank for both individual training and a bespoke training plan, which delivered a leadership and management training programme to the management team.
“In 2015 we started work on succession planning for the business and introduced our children William and Rosie as junior members of the management team. We then restructured the office team, assessing what skills the team had and what was needed in the future.
“Both Shaun and I found it refreshing to be able to bounce ideas off a Business Growth Specialist, who continued to work with us whilst we undertook the training. The process allowed us to spend time working ‘on’ the business, not just ‘in’ it, and as such allowed a business growth strategy to be implemented which has greatly improved the leadership team.
“It’s been a good year for us since we began making these changes with a major uplift in revenue. In the first year of receiving support from Skills Bank the business has seen an increase in turnover, to more than £3 million in 2017.
“Hopefully these improvements will now give us the capacity to grow even further. A succession plan has now been implemented, which will provide longevity to the business, bringing through the next generation.”
Skills Bank provides employers across the Sheffield City Region access to high-quality training and funding, to enable them to develop their business.
Training accessed through Skills Bank can be in the form of an existing qualification or industry-recognised training programme or can also be designed to meet bespoke requirements.
